The surface speaks as a space and also a direction. Unlike a sketchbook as which is a preparatory or intermediate step, Hiran Mitra’s works on paper and lifelong sketchbooks are each definitive oeuvres.
His asemic forms evolved through an exploration of the language of dance and dramatic devices availed during his lengthy involvement in Indian theatre and Performing Arts, so we may consider the drawings as a visual historical account of the latter.
Ink, Watercolour, Brushpens, Spraypaint, Paper collage, and Leaves from around the world have gathered over decades in between the surfaces of sketchbooks, newspapers and boards. Within each frame there are numerous adventures and narrative paths that we can take.
